Countdown to UK’s exit from the European Union (Things you need to know)
It’s Brexit Day!
By 11pm, THE United Kingdom will no longer by part of the European Union. The journey began three and a half years ago, when voters went to the polls to vote and decide on whether Britain should leave or remain in the European Union. Aside the voting in 2016, Brexit deal has made its way through the UK Parliament and has also received Royal Assent.
A Withdrawal Agreement was signed by the prime minister and senior EU officials, and then voted for in the European Parliament. Under the Withdrawal Agreement, a Transition period will begin On February 1, 2020, and will continue till the end of the year. During the transition period, the EU and the UK will have to negotiate a new trade deal.
During this period, EU citizens arriving in the UK and vice-versa will enjoy the same freedom of movement rights. The UK will continue to be part of existing EU trade deals, but will be able to negotiate future trade deals.
Today I have signed the Withdrawal Agreement for the UK to leave the EU on January 31st, honouring the democratic mandate of the British people.
