Updates on Amaechi at the Deloitte in Dialogue Nigeria Economic Outlook, 2020
The Honourable Minister for Transportation, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi is answering questions at the ongoing 2020 Deloitte in Dialogue Nigeria Economic Outlook, held in Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos. We bring you updates from the event.
Quotes from the Minister
“We have built railways; it is the job of the state government to build roads to the different stations. “What we discussed at our last meeting is, the Railway contractors can build two or three kilometers of roads from the stations, and the state governments can continue from there.”
“Railways are usually subsidized, but there are huge debates on subsidizing on cargoes, if we must pay back for construction cost”
“There is an ongoing debate that the reason for constructing railways is not to make money, but to encourage economic growth. If subsidizing cargoes will help to grow the economy and create employment, we will subsidize it. But I need to see the evidence.”
“We are discussing Port Harcourt to Maiduguri rail line. We will construct it. We will start the total reconstruction of that rail corridor. The President has assured me of this and announcement on the project will be made soon.
We even added an Industrial park to the design”
