Buhari Sets To Commission Newly Completed Lekki Deep Seaport in December

With the completion by China Habour Engineering LFTZ Enterprise (CHELE), a subsidiary of China Habour Engineering Company Limited (CHEC), the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) contractor for Lekki Port, the largest Deep Seaport in West Africa is set for commissioning in December by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Vice President of CHEC who is also a director of Lekki Port, Wu Di, disclosed this during the construction completion ceremony held in Lagos on Monday.

Di disclosed that the construction of the Port which officially started on June 15, 2020, and completed on Monday, October 24, 2022. He revealed that the total contract value of the EPC for the project’s first phase is $581 million

With the successful delivery of the first set of Super Post Panamax State-of-the-art Ship to Shore, STS, Cranes and 10 Rubber Tyred Gantries, RTGs, on July 1, 2022, and the delivery of the second batch shipment critical to the commencement of operations comprising of two STS Cranes with 115 packages of accessories and five RTGs with 270 packages of accessories on 5th of August, 2022, the Lekki Deep Seaport is set to be completed on schedule ahead of commencement of operations before the end of the year 2022.

The Lekki Port LFTZ Enterprise Limited (LPLEL) was awarded a 45-year concession of the deep seaport by the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) on a build, own, operate and transfer (BOOT) basis.

According to the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA, Mr. Mohammed Bello Koko, the Lekki Deep Seaport, when operational, would reduce ship waiting time by 50 to 60 per cent.

The federal and Lagos governments are expected to generate $201 billion from the seaport when operational.
