Gov Sanwo-Olu Splashes ₦10m on LASU Best Graduating Student

The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has splashed a whopping ₦10 million on Isioma Sybil Nwosu, the overall best graduating student of Lagos State University (LASU) for the 2023/2024 academic session.

Nwosu, from the Department of Biochemistry, graduated with an inspiring CGPA of 4.93.

Governor Sanwo-Olu made the donation at the LASU’s 28th Convocation Ceremony, Conferment of Rank of Distinguished Professor and Honorary Doctorate Degrees which took place at the Buba Marwa Auditorium of the institution on Thursday, April 10, 2025.

Represented by the Deputy Governor, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, the governor re-echoed the commitment of his administration to providing quality education for Lagosians.

The governor stated that Nwosu’s achievement is a source of pride for the entire university community, adding that it is a result of dedication and perseverance.

He stressed the significance of academic excellence, saying youths must be reminded that excelling in education is just as valuable as success in the sports, entertainment industry, or fashion.

He added that the state government is working with the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) to ensure students of Lagos State-owned institutions benefit from the new national student loan programme to make higher education more accessible and encouraging for indigenes and resident-students.

He said, “Education is the backbone of our society, and we must recognise its importance in addressing societal needs and human development. As leaders, we must ensure our educational system remains relevant and effective in providing innovative solutions to real-life problems.”

He hailed the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, for her dedication and visionary leadership, “Our administration is dedicated to empowering students in state-owned tertiary institutions, nurturing innovative thinkers, problem-solvers and great leaders who will bring about sustainable, transformative change and growth to our state, he added.

The VC, Olatunji-Bello, highlighted some of her achievements since she assumed office. They include but not restricted to the construction of a new Faculty of Arts Building funded through Tetfund Intervention; the Academic Resource and Conference Centre funded through the TETFUND Intervention; ongoing Faculty Building for new School of Tourism funded through Tetfund Intervention; Ongoing construction of 2000 seats capacity CBT Centre by Federal Ministry of Education facilitated by Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila; Ongoing construction of 750 seats capacity lecture theatre facilitated by Her Excellency, Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, and Construction of a new LASU Catering house on our main campus

Others include the ongoing construction of boundary fence; Construction of Olatunji-Bello Auditorium donated by Hon. Olatunji Bello to be commissioned soon; Ongoing construction of 400 seats capacity CBT Centre funded through Tetfund intervention; Construction of Faculty Buildings for Environmental Sciences; Rehabilitation of LASU farm House, poultry and piggery of our School of Agriculture; and ongoing construction of Studios for Faculty of Environmental Sciences

Aside Prof. Joseph Abayomi Olagunju who was conferred with the title of distinguished professor, other eminent Nigerians honoured by the university include former Lagos State Deputy Governor, Femi Pedro and National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Chairman Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa were conferred with honorary doctorate of Business (Banking, Entrepreneurship and National Development) Honoris Causa and honorary doctorate of Humane Letters (Infrastructure, Security and National Development), Honoris Causa.
