FCTA To Charge ₦20k For Illegal Parking, Pedestrian Crossing In Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has announced the penalty of ₦20,000 for illegal parking in Abuja in line with its new ‘park and pay’ policy.

In August, FCTA reintroduced the park and pay policy after it signed an agreement with two concessionaires.

Olusade Adesola, FCTA permanent secretary, had said the move became imperative to promote orderliness and organisation in vehicle parking in the nation’s capital city.

According to Adesola, under the scheme, parking lots would be provided for vehicle owners for a fee, while motorists who indulge in wrong parking would be fined.

He said charges from the policy would be consolidated and shared between the administration and the six area councils.

THE CONCESSIONAIRES

Under the scheme, two concessionaires, NAJEC Limited and Automaten Technik Bauman Nig. Ltd (ATB), were to undertake the park and pay policy in two zones in the FCT.

While NAJEC Limited was asked to cover Zone A comprising Wuse II and Utako with expected revenue of ₦11.875 billion in 10 years, Automaten Technik Bauman Nig. Ltd (ATB) was to take Zone B, which includes Maitama and Garki.

Automaten Technik Bauman Nig. Ltd (ATB) expected revenue over the same period was given as ₦15.05 billion.

THE CHARGES

Two months after the policy was announced, billboards bearing the parking charges and penalties, have been spotted around the nation’s capital.

Parking for up to 30 minutes attracts ₦100, while one hour costs ₦200.

Parking at a “no parking zone” and jaywalking cost ₦20,000 each.

Jaywalking is the act of pedestrians walking in or crossing a road, if doing so in a certain area constitutes a traffic offence.
