There is no cause for alarm over insecurity in Abuja, Defence Headquarters (DHQ) assured residents yesterday.

It said there was nothing to panic about, following last Sunday’s ambush on the Guards’ Brigade by terrorists in Bwari, a suburb of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Two officers and six soldiers were killed in the attack that has thrown Abuja residents into panic.

But the military hierarchy said it has emplaced classified strategies to secure the seat of power and ensure the safety of lives and property.

Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj-Gen. Benard Onyeuko, at a bi-weekly briefing with reporters , said investigations were ongoing.

The aim, he said, is to isolate, apprehend, and possibly prosecute all the enemies of the state who staged the fatal attack.

According to Onyeuko, troops prosecuting counter-insurgency and other operations across theatres have continued to record appreciable gains, hence the need for support and encouragement from the general public.

He said: “The hierarchy of the Armed Forces of Nigeria and other security agencies wishes to re-assure Nigerians of its commitment and pact with all Nigerians.

“With the recent operations carried out between from 23 July we wish to assure residents of FCT Abuja in particular that we are undaunted and unrelenting in our efforts to ensure the safety of lives and properties.

“People should go about their normal business as their safety is guaranteed.

“The support and cooperation of all Nigerians are hereby solicited as security is everybody’s business.

“Citizens are encouraged to report any unusual persons in your community to security agencies. If you see something say something.”

Asked to provide an update on the recent attack on elite forces in the FCT, he said: “Investigations are still ongoing. We want to assure residents of their safety.

“I am confident to tell everybody, especially the citizens of Abuja, that their security is assured.”
