BREAKING: Court orders Nigerian government to pay N200,000 fine to Sowore
A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has fined the Federal Government the sum of N200,000 for requesting an adjournment of the trial of Sahara Reporters publisher, Omoyele Sowore, on frivolous grounds.
The prosecutor, Kayode Alilu, who had applied to arraign the defendants based on amended charges, informed the court that the office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) has taken over the prosecution of the case but were yet to effect service of the amended charges on the defendants.
Defence lawyer, Mr. Olayinka Olumide-Fusika (SAN), contended that the prosecution were not prepared for trial and urged the court to strike out the charges.
Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu who described the prosecution’s request for the adjournment as frivolous, postponed the trial till Thursday. She further stated that the proceedings would not continue if the prosecution fails to present an evidence of the payment the fine to the defence or come to court with the cash on Thursday.
