The Senate has on Wednesday approved the nomination of Haliru Nababa as the Controller General of the Nigeria Correctional Service.
The confirmation of the new CG followed the presentation of the report of the Chairman, Senate Committee on Interior, Senator Kashim Shettima, at plenary.
Nababa succeeds Jaafaru Ahmed who was Controller General from May 2016 to January 2021.
Senator Shettima while presenting his report said that there was no petition or incriminating report against the nominee.
He added that Nababa displayed a high level of intelligence and appeared to have the temerity to hold the office of Controller-General.
Shettima observed that Nababa satisfied the requirements of Section 3(2), as contained in the Nigeria Correctional Service Act, 2019.
According to him, the nominee while appearing for screening before the Committee, identified lack of adequate supply of arms and ammunitions to curb jail break in the country; lack of adequate funding; inadequate releases of allocations; deterioration of Correctional Centres’ structures as some challenges faced by the Nigeria Correctional Service.
He added that Nababa further posited that inmates awaiting trial are to be given urgent attention to decongest Centres.
Senators approved that Nababa be confirmed for appointment as CG of Nigeria Correctional Service when it was put to voice vote by Senate President Ahmad Lawan.
