Why Disengaged NNSL Seafarers Are Yet To Receive Entitlement – Jamoh
The Director General of the Nigerian Marítime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr Bashir Jamoh, has blamed the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), for the current woes of disengaged seafarers of the liquidated Nigerian National Shipping Line (NNSL).
It was reported that MWUN, kicked against the planned resuscitation of the National Shipping Line (NNSL) by the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy.
The union said without unpaid entitlements and pensions of disengaged Seafarers of the liquidated shipping line, setting up the shipping line is a mirage.
However, the NIMASA DG, Dr Jamoh, while responding to the President-General of MWUN, Com. Adewale Adeyanju, demand for the payment of retirement benefits to disengaged seafarers of the liquidated NNSL, at the maiden call of the largest Container-RORO Vessel in the world to the Lagos ports, said all offers made to the labour unions are rebuffed by their leadership.
Jamoh called for return to the drawing board, even as he assured the workers of the liquidated government firm of the resolve of the federal ministry of Marine and Blue Economy to pay all workers affected.
“We made offers to the NNSL workers and we made offers and you (unions) rejected. Instead of the union to accept and comeback for renegotiation but they kept rejecting our offers,” Dr Jamoh explained.
He, however, continued, “the Marine and Blue Economy ministry detest injustice, and as we go back to the drawing board, we will ensure that everyone is paid their entitlement,” he assured.
Meanwhile, the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, at the maiden visit of MV Great Lagos, assured the shipping line and the terminal operator, Ports and Terminal Multiservice Limited (PTML), of enhanced security and trade facilitation.
CGC Adeniyi who was represented by Zonal Cordinator, Zone A, Bello Jibo, said the vessel, MV Great Lagos, would help increase Customs revenue at the PTML command.
“I congratulate PTML over the maiden visit of MV Lagos to their terminal. May this investment bring economic development to the country. The NCS in PTML will do all we can to facilitate trade and improve security and anytime you want to discuss, feel free because the CGC’s door is opened and available. Also, the more MV Lagos visits Lagos, the more Customs gets revenue,” he said.
