Former Egyptian President, Hosni Mubarak has died at the age of 91. According to BBC Africa, Mubarak died in a military hospital in Cairo. Mubarak underwent surgery in late January but had earlier recovered.
Mubarak spent three decades in office before a popular uprising swept Egypt in 2011. In 2012, Mubarak was sentenced to life imprisonment over the deaths of some of the 900 protesters who were killed by security forces during the uprising a year earlier. That conviction was overturned and Mubarak was freed in March 2017.
In a condolence message, Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu on eulogized the late Egyptian President.
“On behalf of the citizens and government of Israel, I would like to express deep sorrow on the passing of President Hosni Mubarak,” Netanyahu said in a statement.
“President Mubarak, my personal friend, was a leader who led his people to peace and security, to peace with Israel. I met with him many times. I was impressed by his commitment; we will continue to follow this common path.”
