The Defence Headquarters has debunked a viral video purportedly showing a recent attack by the Boko Hàram on troops in Marte, Borno State, describing it as recycled propaganda aimed at demoralising Nigerian forces and the public.

In a statement issued on Friday in Abuja, Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Markus Kangye, stated that a forensic analysis revealed the video was first circulated in December 2020 and is not connected to the recent Marte incident.

Kangye said the video, which has been widely shared online, is being deliberately reused by sympathisers of terrorist groups to mislead Nigerians and distort the gains made by the military in its counter-terrorism operations.

He confirmed that troops in Marte were indeed attacked by terrorists on May 12 at around 3:00 am but successfully repelled the assault, killing several insurgents while others fled with injuries.

Kangye condemned the spread of the old video, describing it as an attempt to undermine public confidence in the Nigerian Armed Forces and warned that those behind such disinformation campaigns would be identified and prosecuted.

He urged Nigerians to disregard the fake video and rely solely on official channels for verified information on military operations.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria remain fully committed to defending the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity,” Kangye said, adding that significant progress was being made in dismantling terrorist networks across the country.
