Iyanya charged with car theft in Lagos
The Police Special Fraud Unit (PSFU) Ikoyi, Lagos, has charged ‘Kurukere’ singer, Iyanya Onoyom Mbuk, with Car theft. Iyanya as he his popularly known, was arraigned on February 4 before Justice Mobolanle Okikiolu-Ighile of the Igbosere High Court.
The Police Special Fraud Unit (PSFU) in Ikoyi, Lagos, had filed the charge marked LD/9024c/2019 against the singer on March 15, 2019. Following Iyanya’s failure to appear before the court, the case was adjourned for six time before Justice Okikiolu-Ighile threatened to invoke the power of the court to ensure Iyanya’s attendance to take his plea at the last adjournment.
Police prosecutor and a Superintendent of Police (SP), Chukwu Agwu had told the court that in September 2018, Iyanya allegedly dishonestly converted to his use or of another person, a Black Toyota Land Cruiser Prado Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) marked MAVINIY, with Chassis and Engine numbers JTEBX7FJ7EK165480 and 2TR1385954, belonging to The Temple Management Company Ltd
The prosecutor also said Iyanya’s offence contravenes Sections 278(1) (b), 279(1)(2) and punishable under Section 285(10) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011. Agwu further prayed the court to remand Iyanya in the Nigerian Correctional Services (NCS) custody, pending the hearing and determination of his bail application.
While Iyanya pleaded not guilty, his counsel, Mr. Williams A., opposed the prayer for Iyanya’s detention and undertook to produce him in court on the next adjournment.
Justice Okikiolu-Ighile who adjourned till February 27 and March 17, for ruling on Iyanya’s bail application and commencement of trial respectively, also granted the defense counsel’s prayer for Iyanya not to be detained.
