The Acting Director General/ Chief Executive of Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology (NITT) Zaria, Dr Bayero Salih Farah, has said that the foremost Nigerian Transport institute is going through rejuvenation.

Bayero, who spoke exclusively to Aspheric News in Abuja, said since he took over the leadership of the Institute in May 2019, a lot have been put in place to reposition and make the Institute renowned in the West African Sub region.

“So far we have been able to establish six different outreach centres in the six geopolitical zones. The Institute has also gotten accreditation from National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), the Ahmadu Bello University-Zaria for Masters Programme, and its running Part-time programmes. We are beginning new admission by January next year”, he said.

The DG decried level of competition the Institute is experiencing from private organizations, consulting firms, which has affected the growth and effectiveness expected of the establishment.

He noted that the act which established the Institute in 1984 needs to be reviewed and amended to increase the mandates and power of the Institute “You know at the time the Institute was established, it was the only transport institute, there was no competition. Since then things have changed, we now have so many other organizations competing with the Institute. We thank God the amendment process is ongoing, and very soon it would be signed into law”, Bayero noted.

NITT was established in 1986 by Decree No 6 of March 14 (now CAP 116 of the Federal Laws of Nigeria). The Institute was established as a Transport Management Development and Research Institute for Nigeria and the West African Sub-region.

By that legal instrument, the Institute was expected to serve as a Management Training Institute for all aspects of transport; a Centre for transfer of technology in all aspects of the transport sector; a Transport Intelligence Centre, and a Data Bank for the collection, collation and analysis of all economic and technological data relating to all aspects of transportation. The Institute Awards different categories of certificates including advanced certificates, diploma, postgraduate diploma in Transport.
